The Gower peninsula was designated as Britain’s first area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) in 1956. This long AONB status has protected its natural beauty from overdevelopment and commercialisation.

Gower’s main holiday attraction is its magnificent coastline and beaches but with a public right of way network that covers 431 km (268 miles), it’s also ideal for walkers and other outdoor enthusiasts.

Due to the stringent planning controls within the AONB, caravan sites and Certificated Locations are few and far between and pitches for touring caravans and camper vans are at a premium at most times.

Visiting the Gower peninsula

Stembridge Farm Certificated Location is in an ideal position to explore Gower by car or via public transport. One of the best ways to fully appreciate Gower’s wonderful coast, views, castles and countryside is on foot. There are over 200 miles of footpaths and rights of way that crisscross the peninsula and you can start your walk at Stembridge. There is a request bus stop just outside the entrance to the farm and walking enthusiasts can travel to a chosen destination and walk back to Stembridge via any of the numerous scenic routes.

Rhossili is one of the “must visit” Gower destinations for the view of the iconic Worm’s Head promontory and the spectacular Rhossili bay. It’s about eight miles by road from Stembridge to Rhossilli where there is a large National Trust car park. The descent from the cliff to the beach is via a steep well-kept footpath. Llangennith, four miles by car from Stembridge, lies at the northern end of Rhossili Bay and is a popular destination for families and surfers. Rhossili Bay is free from any seasonal dog walking restrictions.

Swansea is Wales’s waterfront city with a five-mile promenade running along Swansea Bay from the Maritime quarter to Mumbles. There are many attractions at various points along the promenade such as The Slip, Brynmill, Sketty Lane, Blackpill, Oystermouth, Southend, and Mumbles itself. The stretch of the promenade from Oysternouth to Mumbles has a cosmopolitan village field with its mix of shops and bars. It was one of Dylan Thomas’ many stamping grounds and is home to some world-class ice cream.

Swansea itself is home to Wales’s largest indoor markets, Wales’s tallest building, Dylan Thomas’ childhood home, the Dylan Thomas Centre, and the Marina housing the Waterfront Museum.

The Gower Beach Guide App was developed by the owners of Hill House, Gower Self Catering Holiday Cottage. It is located in Llanrhidian village and provides self-catering holiday accommodation for families all year round. The inspiration for the App came from the fact that first-time visitors to the peninsula are overwhelmed by the number, variety, and diversity of the bays, beaches, and coves along the peninsula’s relatively short coastline. Over the years the owners have guided Hill Housebvisitors to the beaches that best suited their needs and this local knowledge has been built into the App. Apart from holidaymakers, the Gower Beach Guide App will also be particularly useful to anyone walking the Swansea and Gower section of the Wales Coast Path.
